Ladner's May Royal Court

The Ladner Pioneer May Days has been a cherished tradition in Delta since 1896, standing as the
second-longest-running May Day celebration in B.C. While its roots harken back to British Victorian
spring fetes, it has gracefully evolved into a community event that offers the charm of a small-town fair
with big-time fun. Like all community gatherings, this tradition serves as a time for people to come
together and celebrate the year's accomplishments. Our mission is simple: to uphold an inclusive fair
that provides numerous free opportunities for children and families to enjoy. From our vibrant parade
and lively main stage to the bustling market, delightful food trucks, exhilarating rides, and other
activities, we aim to offer the community a safe and enjoyable way to celebrate.

Over the years, the Royal May Court has undergone its own evolution, transforming from a
predominantly female affair to one that embraces all genders and those who seek to represent their
school positively. Annually, we invite every elementary school in Delta to select a sixth-grade child to
partake in the festivities. These students volunteer and are chosen at random. We ensure that all
representatives are involved in the selection process, where the Royal Monarch and court members are
decided. Additionally, they play integral roles in the parade and main stage ceremonies. Whenever
possible, the selected court also participates in other community events in Delta and engages in
volunteer opportunities. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID lockdowns, we adapted by hosting
a virtual event in 2021 to honor both the 2020 and 2021 court participants. Despite the inability to meet
in person, the children displayed unwavering passion in representing their school and community.

Today, our aim is to foster togetherness, understanding, inclusion, and compassion among all Royal
May Court participants, providing them with a platform to showcase their love for their community and
their immense hearts. We recognize the importance of evolving with the times while staying true to the
essence of our traditions. Moving forward, we aspire to continue embracing diversity and providing
opportunities for all members of our community to shine.
